Description
Equine hyperkalemic periodic paralysis or HYPP, is a genetic disorder that occurs in horses. This disease is a dominant trait which means that it will most likely be passed onto offspring wither it is homozygous (H/H) or heterozygous (N/H). It affects the sodium channels in muscle cells, and the ability to regulate potassium levels in the blood. It's physical characteristics are larger muscles, bulkier builds, and very straight legs. As if the added weight didn't already add strain on the horse's bodies, HYPP causes muscle weakness that can eventually lead to uncontrollable shaking followed by paralysis...
This disease should be under control as it's a genetic biased. This means we need to halt the breeding of HYPP positive horses so that this disease is no longer a problem!
More information on HYPP can be found on UC Davis - Veterinary Medicine's website.
